Ghetto. It’s a place,
the place where everyone from Gandhi to Gotti and Bhuvan (Lagaan) to Biggie
had their roots. It’s also an adjective. Ghetto describes street-life.
It’s people with their ears to the street and hearts to the beat. Ghetto
is understanding difficult pasts and prominent futures. Ghetto is struggle,
hustle, breaking loose, and succeeding.
FOB. Literally, fresh off
the boat. But in this context, FRESH is the key word. Fresh meaning new. Fresh
meaning innovative. Fresh meaning exhilarating. Fresh meaning invigorating.
Fresh, brand new, stepping-out, being bold. Crossing borders. By plane, foot,
car, or even by simply bringing together a young hovah from New York and a Punjabi
MC. Now that’s fresh. Finding new ways at all costs to express and communicate
to the world the talent and passion throbbing inside each persons veins.
That’s basically what
we’re all about. Bringing together the desi community from all different
areas and backgrounds to collide on the common ground of music. Here DJ’s
and music-heads in general can express themselves and provide a glaring example
of what Jay-Z, Method Man, Truth Hurts, and plenty of others have already picked
up: South Asian music is blazing and as the community and its people evolve
… they keep expanding. Acceptance is the key to this evolution. Acceptance
and celebration of differences. Differences in style, thought, and expression.
So get on the boat. “ And if you don’t know… now you know!”
